Angiography is an x-ray procedure that involves injecting dye into the chambers of your heart or the arteries that lead to your heart (the coronary arteries) to check for clogged coronary arteries by measuring blood flow and pressure in the heart chambers.
A cardiac catheterization operation involves inserting a long, thin tube (called a catheter) into a leg artery ( femoral route ) or hand artery ( radial route ) and threading it into the heart. A dye is injected through the catheter and into the heart once the catheter is in place in the heart. The dye allows doctors to examine the function of the heart chambers and coronary arteries.
Most comfortable and preferred route by patients. Less painful. Easy to walk and join work next day.
The patient is given an injection of a dye, which flows through the blood carried by the coronary blood vessels. The CT guided images of the dye flowing through the coronaries is captured over some time to look for the blockages if any. Calcium score is calculated from the films. The rise in percentage of Calcium deposition in coronaries is scored . The blockages are in proportion of the calcium scores estimated. This gives us an idea of coronary artery disease. Thallium Scans are used to diagnose Ischemic Heart Disease.
Checks the coronary arteries (heart), blood vessels and the heart chambers
Checks the blood vessels in and around the brain
Checks the blood vessels supplying the lungs
Checks the blood vessels supplying the kidneys
Checks blood vessels of upper or lower limbs or any other specified artery under investigation. Angiogram of the splanchnic , mesenteric circulation and intestinal circulation checks blood supply in the abdominal organs.

Bruising & Soreness | Shows the exact number of blocked coronary arteries |
Injury to catheterized artery | Coronary arteries narrowed by fatty plagues (Atherosclerosis) |
Stroke & Arrhythmias | Identify the locations of blockages in your blood vessels. |
Excessive bleeding | Show how much blood flow is obstructed in your vessels. |
Infection | Examine the outcomes of earlier coronary artery bypass surgery. |
Allergic reactions | Examine the flow of blood through your heart and veins. |
The cost of Angiography is based on:
Angiograms help doctors diagnose conditions affecting the heart, brain, kidneys, intestines, arms or legs. It also helps detecting abnormalities in blood vessels, like blood clots, etc.
A thin catheter is inserted into the artery making a small incision on your wrist (radial) or thigh(femoral). The area is numbed before the procedure, so, it is not painful at all!
It is a safe procedure but minor side effects are commonly seen. Speak to your doctor before the actual procedure for more guidance.
The ECG (Electrocardiogram) does not detect blockages, but it can give a warning sign in certain cases.
Many people feel better in a day or so after having the Angiography done. Patient may feel tired and the wound site is likely to be tender for up to a week.
Angiography is a safe procedure, but risk and complications are higher in older patients.
Coronary Angiography is a procedure that uses a special dye and x-rays to see the blood flow in your heart.
