The surgery to treat chronic sinusitis, remove polyps from the sinuses and treat other conditions is called Sinus Surgery. People having severe sinus problems are more likely to have sinus surgery for removing infected sinus tissue, bone, and polyps. Sinusitis is swelling in the sinus that causes congestion and discomfort. There are several sinus surgeries designed to be less invasive with shorter recovery times.
FUNCTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY (FESS)
FESS is the most common type of sinus surgery that widens the drainage passage between the nose and the sinuses, removing bone or infected tissue so that the trapped mucus can get out. It is an endoscopic surgery, where endoscopes are guided with lights on the end to see the inside of the sinuses.
It is a minimally invasive treatment for sinusitis done using an endoscope and catheter to guide a small balloon into the nose. The balloon is inflated to increase the passageway to your sinus.
A new opening is created from your maxillary sinus, which is the cavity behind your cheek, to your nose so mucus can drain from the sinus cavity.
Avoid dust for about 4 weeks. Avoid strenuous activities such as biking, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercises for at least 1 week. You may drive when you are no longer on the prescribed medications.
Sinus surgery is a daycare procedure thus, you can go home within a couple of hours after the procedure, but you have to limit your daily activity for about 2 weeks.
Sinus surgery is done under the guidance of general or local anesthesia, thus the patient feels no pain during the surgery while mild to moderate pain is experienced for about a week after surgery.
Eat soft blended food like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soups, yogurt, etc. for few days. Avoid eating nuts, rice, seeds, and spicy oily foods.
You may experience discoloured mucus or large nasal crusts from your nose for up to 3-4 weeks after surgery.
Caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages should be avoided for several days after sinus surgery. Alcohol is a blood thinner and can cause a risk of bleeding post-surgery.
Sinus surgery cost depends on:
You should stay away from sports, exercise, and any other physical activity for at least the first week after surgery. You should also not blow your nose for the first week. Straining, physical activity, and nose blowing can increase the bleeding you will experience during the recovery period.
